2009 winner of the Xtreme Technology Makeover

Minneapolis, MN– December 2, 2009–Diversified Plastics, Inc. has won office technology valued at $105,179 as part of the Xtreme Technology Makeover contest. Organized by Verus Corp., RJS Software, 18 other sponsors and supported by five Twin Cities Chambers of Commerce (MetroNorth, Minneapolis Regional, North Hennepin Area, St. Paul and TwinWest), this contest was the first of what is to become an annual event.

“We were ecstatic to have won as we had been hopeful about the possibility, but didn’t really expect to be chosen,” said Annette Lund, vice president, Diversified Plastics. “It was a big surprise when the check was unveiled and our name was on it.” The excitement was shared by Jill Johnson, executive director, North Hennepin Area Chamber of Commerce. “Diversified Plastics was one of our three members that became finalists, and we were thrilled to find outthey had won.”

The Xtreme Technology Makeover (www.xtremetechnologymakeover.com) contest was similar to events initiated by Microsoft Corp. around the country. It was open to Twin Cities businesses with 10 or more employees that could demonstrate a need for the equipment. “We saw this event as a way to help a company in these tough economic times become more efficient and productive with the latest information technology tools,” said Kevin Willette, owner of Verus Corp.(www.veruscorp.com) and one of the contestʼs key organizers. “This also gave our sponsors an opportunity to give back to the business community while showcasing their technology solutions.”

Promoted by the five chambers of commerce, the contest drew applications from 60 local businesses. A selection team reviewed all applications, conducted face-to-face interviews with each company and gathered additional information. From this group of 60 companies, the team chose 11 finalists which were turned over to a panel of judges, made up of one representative from each of the sponsors and chambers of commerce, to make a final selection.

Contest prizes included a computer server, firewall and related software, document management hardware and software, a complete phone system and service, system installation, software training classes and ergonomic furniture. “These products will help us update our technology and become more productive,” said Lund. “We are in the process of buying new manufacturing software, and our phone system needs updating, so the timing for a new server and other IT equipment could not be better. As our business grows in the medical device and aerospace markets, the document retrieval system will be a necessity to help us manage the required documentation so much easier and efficiently.”

Diversified Plastics manufactures CoAxia manifold, medical device

CoAxia catheter, medical device

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN–October 19, 2009–Diversified Plastics, Inc. has been chosen by CoAxiaTM, Inc. to produce a polycarbonate miniature manifold, which

h is part of CoAxia’s NeuroFloTM catheter. The catheter is currently in clinical trials to determine the effectiveness of a unique approach to treat ischemic stroke.

“We began working with Diversified Plastics two years ago in preparation for introducing a smaller version of the NeuroFlo catheter into our SENTIS clinical trial,” says Rick Kravik, principal mechanical design engineer at CoAxia, Inc. “Because we initially only need parts in the hundreds to complete the clinical trial and to obtain FDA approval, we did not want to invest in a production mold at this time. We needed a supplier who could provide design assistance, machine the manifold portion of the catheter and, when we were ready, mold the production parts. Furthermore, this supplier had to excel in precision manufacturingthe size of the hole down the middle of the manifold can vary only by the diameter of a human hair, +/-.003 inch. Diversified Plastics has proven capable of meeting all of our needs.”

The NeuroFlo catheter is a dual-balloon endovascular device that is placed in the descending aorta near the renal arteries. The balloons are inflated for 45 minutes to partially block the blood flow to the lower extremities, diverting more of it to the brain.  The treatment, investigational at this time, is intended to minimize the effects of the stroke by increasing blood flow to the brain during this critical time.

Diversified Plastics uses a computer numerically controlled (CNC) lathe and mill to machine catheter parts for CoAxia. They also provide the pad printing of the  identification nomenclature on the manifolds.

“Our company specializes in plastic injection molding and machining prototypes for medical product companies. We can also provide secondary operations such as pad printing, spin welding, sonic welding, and clean room assembly and packaging,” says Joni Davis, sales engineer with Diversified Plastics, Inc.

This certification represents a formal recognition of Bourgeaultʼs expertise in demonstrating a high level of understanding and commitment to quality techniques and practices.

Individuals awarded with the Six Sigma Black Belt are professionals who apply Six Sigma business philosophies and principles. A black belt demonstrates team leadership and manages team dynamics in all aspects of the DMAIC (define, measure, analyze, improve, control) model. Diversified Plastics expands service offerings with new clean room

New clean room at Diversified Plastics, Inc.

Minneapolis, MINN–June 22, 2009–High-precision injection molder, Diversified Plastics, Inc. has expanded their production capabilities by offering value-added services that require a clean room environment. This facility allows the company to extend their reach into industries such as medical devices, filtration and aerospace where special assembly and packaging operations need to be performed in clean room conditions.

“Adding a clean room facility was in our long-term plans; however, a medical device industry customer had an immediate production need, therefore we accelerated our installation plans”, says Annette Lund, vice president. Diversified Plastics is now equipped to assemble, sonic weld, and package parts all in a clean environment. In addition, they will inventory and deliver the customerʼs product as needed. “This gives us a big competitive advantage by offering these value-added services for our customers,” says Joe Bourgeault, quality director. “Now our customers make only one stop to have their products molded, assembled, packaged and inventoried.”

Clean room facilities are not commonly found at plastics injection molders. The Diversified Plastics clean room is certified to ISO 14644-1 class 8 standards, which means the filtered air in the clean room contains no more than 100,000 particles larger than one-half (0.5) micron in size, per cubic foot of air. A micron is one millionth of a meter, and for comparison, the human hair averages about 75 microns in diameter. The room has positive pressure airflow, which forces contaminants outward when the clean room door is opened. Before entering the clean room environment, workers must enter a changing room to clothe in special apparel such as smocks, shoe coverings, and hair nets. Before any production begins, all work surfaces are wiped down completely. To ensure their strict level of cleanliness is maintained, Diversified Plastics continually monitors the roomʼs particle count.

Diversified Plastics increases plastic mold production capabilities

Minneapolis, MINN–May 28, 2009–To fulfill customer expectations and grow into new markets, Diversified Plastics, Inc. recently expanded its mold production capabilities and increased its production with the acquisition of a high-speed, high-accuracy machining center from Haas Automation, Inc.

The VM-2 vertical milling machine allows the Design Tool and Engineering subsidiary of Diversified Plastics to produce high-quality molds with a fine surface finish. From these molds, they are able to produce very small, high precision injection-molded parts that are used in the medical device and aerospace industries. With a positional accuracy of ± 0.0002”, the machine can create complex mold designs for a multitude of industries.

“Because of its unique capabilities, this machine has significantly increased our capacity in fine machining,” said Annette Lund, vice president at Diversified Plastics. The machineʼs high-speed processing, along with the ability to change tools in less than three seconds and run “lights out”, or unattended, has given the company another competitive advantage. “Our new machine has allowed us to decrease our tooling lead times and be more responsive to our customerʼs needs,” says Lund.

Diversified Plastics chosen as Obama-Biden small group community discussion leaders

Diversified Plastics led Obama-Biden healthcare Transition Team

Diversified Plastics-led Obama-Biden healthcare transition team

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN — December 20, 2008 — Recently, the ObamaBiden Transition Team asked Diversified Plastics to lead a small group community discussion on what people felt were the main issues regarding health care. The incoming Administration was requesting thousands of these small groups to meet between December 15th and December 31st of 2008. Invitations were sent out to local businesses and within a period of 48 hours we had received an overwhelming response. What was originally anticipated to be a group of only 1012 turned into a crowd of 27. Another dozen had to be turned away due to lack of space.

The meeting was held on Tuesday, December 30th in the middle of a snow storm but that didn’t stop people from filling up our lunch room. Many business owners, bankers, managers of long term care facilities, the Director of local food shelf, along with the Mayor of Brooklyn Park were just a few of the individuals that attended.

Over the course of the meeting, we had a very diverse range of opinions and insights as to what needs to happen to improve healthcare and the related costs in this country. The results of this meeting were then forwarded to the ObamaBiden Transition Team to help shape the new administration’s health care reform proposals.

The local cable channel twelve was on hand to report on our meeting as well. You can view this report at the following link: http://nwtv12.dayport.com/launcher/4628/?tf=nwtv12player.tpl

We received some very good responses and the group overwhelmingly indicated that this type of meeting should be an important part of shaping the country’s health care reform initiative. Despite the differences of opinion, the group remained very professional and positive toward each other.

It was a very gratifying experience to help play a small part in setting up this discussion. Hopefully, our responses will aid in making some truly positive changes on this very important issue.
